Dream States

With so many different dream experiences, it is hard to know where to begin. But before we explore different dream states, I want you to keep in mind that the language of dreams is always with us, whether we are sleeping, awake, or at various states in-between. As you hone your intuition and learn to read the signs along your daily road, you will find wonderful puzzles just waiting to be solved that will lead you to places you never dreamed. So with that in mind, here is a certainly-not definitive list of states of dreaming and dream-like experiences.

Think of it this way. There are different places. The dream world. The waking world. The place people go when they pass on. The places where  other beings exist, angles, demons, other beings we have yet to meet. Sometimes these different places intersect. We can be in the dream realm and touch someone in the waking world, or we can be in the waking world and touch someone in the realm beyond. Or they can touch us. These experiences can happen anywhere, but there are places on this earthly plane that the Celtic Saints called “thin places” They exist where the veil between worlds is thin, sometimes just because of the earth’s energy and sometimes because of the events or prayer that went on in such places. You will find these dream states intensify in thin places. In fact, if you want to increase your awareness of these other states, you can cultivate a thin place right in your own home. More on that later……

Dreams:    You are asleep. Your eyes are closed and stories are playing behind your eyelids. While these inner-movies may feel real while you are sleeping, they slip away quickly when you awake. STATE: You are dreaming.

Out of Body Experiences:     You are asleep. Your eyes are closed, but you think you are awake. It is very real. You get up and go take a shower and get dressed and come back into the bedroom to discover you are actually still sleeping. You think you wake up again and repeat the process. Sometimes it can be very difficult to tell whether you are awake or sleeping even after you actually wake up. STATE: Your spirit left your body.

Out of Body Travel Experiences:     You are asleep. Your eyes are closed. You think of someplace and you are suddenly there. It is very real. When you wake up you feel like you are being dragged back into consciousness. Your dream feels more like a memory than a dream. You have knowledge of something you could not have known, like you know what the paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel look like even though you have never seen them. STATE: You left your body and your spirit traveled to a place in the waking world.

Interactive Out of Body Experience:     You are asleep. Your eyes are closed. You see someone in your dream and when that person looks at you, you have the feeling of connection from their eyes. It can be shockingly real, enough to suddenly wake you up. STATE: You left your body and traveled to a place in the waking world where you saw someone who is awake either physically saw you or felt your presence strongly.

Lucid Dream:     You are asleep. Your eyes are closed. You are aware that you are dreaming. Things have the same reality quality as a regular dream. In some cases you can make choices to control your dream. STATE: You are consciously aware that you are dreaming.

Shared Dream:     You are asleep. Your eyes are closed. You are dreaming a normal dream but there is one person (or possibly several people) who seems more real than anything else in your dream. When you wake-up, you discuss the dream with that person and discover they had the same dream. STATE: You and another person are in the dream state in the same place.

Supernatural Visitation Dream:    You are asleep. Your eyes are closed. You are dreaming a normal dream, but someone who has crossed from this life to the next, or some sort of angelic or demonic being, or some other being is in your dream and that person or entity is very real. There is often an exchange of information in these dreams. Sometimes it is shared verbally, sometimes only intuitively. When you wake up you are stunned at the difference between the reality quality of that person or entity and the “background” of your dream. STATE: You are dreaming and someone from a different state has entered your dream.

Natural Visitation Dream:     You are asleep. Your eyes are closed. You are dreaming a normal dream and someone you know is in the dream. That person is very real and may not have anything to do with your dream, almost like your dream is being interrupted. Again, when you wake up, you are shocked at the difference in the reality quality of the person and the “background” of your dream. STATE: Someone from the waking world has entered your dream.

Trance:     You are awake. Your eyes are closed. Images flood though your mind but they are so real you feel as if you are there. You loose conscienceless of your surroundings. When you open your eyes, you feel as if you are pulling out of something. The experience feels very significant. STATE: You entered another plane of existence. In this case there are so many places you could have gone. You may have entered someone else’s dream. You may have traveled to a place in the waking world. You may have entered a higher or lower plane.

Vision:     You are awake. Your eyes are closed. You are quite conscience of your surroundings. Images float behind your eyelids, often disconnected. You may even hear words are sounds. When you open your eyes you feel as if you are gently waking from a relaxed state. You remember the images clearly. STATE: You are awake and are being given a message or information from an outside source. It’s probably important. Pay attention.

It can be a picture or a word or even a smell or taste. Sometimes this information directly impacts what you are doing or seeing at the time. Body Signals:     You are awake. Your eyes are open. You get a feeling in your body that is not related to anything physical. You may feel sick to your stomach or your throat may tighten up. If you slow down and pay attention, you will realize the feeling is related to a thought you had. STATE: Your body’s own intuition is telling you something.
